The Spanish festival Día de la Virgen del Carmen is a major celebration recognised throughout the coastal regions of the Iberian Peninsula. Virgen del Carmen, or the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel is the patroness and protector of all seamen and a popular patron saint for a number of the villages along the coastal provinces. It is a big spectacle in Porto Colom on Mallorca on the 16th of july. There is a procession with all smaller boats from the harbour of Porto Colom. The sailors decorate the boats with flowers and on one boat is the statue of Virgin Carmen. After the boat procession there is a celebration in the old part of Porto Colom with a small market.
